Anxiety And Depression Are Not Character Flaws

March 30, 2022 Posted by Kristen Stewart Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety And Depression Are Real

Do you find yourself worrying so much to the point of not engaging in any activities? Are you experiencing a general feeling of sadness that makes it hard to look forward to anything? These are the signs of anxiety and depression, but are these conditions character flaws?

Depression is a mood disorder caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Left untreated, patients can go in and out of depression or remain depressed for prolonged periods.

Anxiety disorders are a set of crippling mental health conditions that make getting through a day more difficult. People living with anxiety disorders are often in a near-constant state of fear and panic.

Anxiety and depression often go hand in hand, increasing the need for urgent professional care. If you’re experiencing a prolonged state of sadness or the constant feeling of panic and fear, it’s best to seek help from a professional.

These Conditions Can Affect Anyone

Anxiety and depression are no different from any of the multiple conditions that affect people worldwide. Data from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) shows that anxiety affects 18.1% of the population every year. It also states that mood disorders, including depression, are the leading cause of disability.

Additionally, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) also states that 60% of people dealing with anxiety will experience depression. These statistics highlight how anxiety and depression are not character flaws in a handful of people.

There’s also no distinction in the types of people affected as there are countless examples of how depression cuts across age, sex, and social strata.

It Can Be Difficult To Function Normally In Everyday Life

One of the main signs of depression and anxiety is the loss of interest in almost everything, a symptom known as anhedonia. Anhedonia makes getting out of bed impossible, and activities you find fun may no longer appeal to you. General everyday functions like cooking meals, personal grooming, and going to work will feel almost impossible.

Anhedonia can also affect your relationships as you withdraw into your shell. Romantic partners may misread the situation, and platonic friends may start to exclude you from activities.

The negative impact on everyday life is one of the reasons why you shouldn’t “wait out” these conditions.

Treatment Is Available For Anxiety And Depression

People living with depression can get professional diagnoses and treatment. The treatment for these conditions may include therapy and medication.

Medications for depression don’t work instantaneously. You need to maintain consistency when using them, as you’re only likely to start seeing results after 4-6 weeks of use. Work with your healthcare provider to determine the right combination of antidepressants for you.

Therapy treatments focus on changing your perception of yourself or certain situations—two common causes of depression. Therapy from an experienced professional will also help you identify stressors and the best ways to manage them.

There Is No Shame In Seeking Help

If you’re battling depression and anxiety, it may be difficult to accept the situation and seek help. Some people don’t want the stigma that comes with receiving any type of mental health treatment. Others are simply uninterested in sharing their problems and life stories with a healthcare provider or therapist.

However, shying away from getting help will only worsen the situation. If you want to return to your usual vibrant self, it’s important to get help as quickly as possible.

You Are Not Alone

You don’t have to go through anxiety and depression alone. There are many bodies online and offline committed to putting you and others like you on the path to recovery. A quick search online will offer many options to help.

Additionally, you can also speak with a qualified therapist near you. A good therapist will provide you with the right guidance and insight necessary for recovery. You’ll receive evidence-based tips and learn healthy habits that will improve your chances of leading a healthier life.
