Why Therapy and Why Not, Today?
It’s normal not to always feel like going to a therapy session. Maybe you’re just tired, having an “off” day, or facing an unexpected event. Whatever the reason, we will walk you through handling this delicate issue.
Before we describe the steps, note that “I don’t want to go to therapy today” and “I don’t want to go to therapy at all” are two different things. If you’re thinking the latter, you may want to reconsider your therapy options altogether.
For instance, virtual therapy could be a better choice for you than in-person therapy. Check out this blog post to see if virtual therapy could be a fit for you.
Let Your Therapist Know
Whatever the reason, notify your therapist as soon as possible that you’re not attending today’s session. Your therapist deals with cancellations all the time, so don’t feel self-conscious about canceling your appointment. Your therapist will appreciate you giving them notice and can confirm the cancellation.
However, before you proceed further, know that the first month of therapy builds a solid foundation for your relationship with your therapist. If you’re currently within that timeframe, you may want to reconsider canceling your appointment.
However, if your instincts tell you not to go to therapy today, proceed to cancel and reschedule your appointment.
Appreciate the Therapy Process
Your therapist may ask you why you don’t want to attend therapy today. Don’t be shy about letting your therapist know why, as they encounter this issue all the time. Moreover, it can be eye-opening for your therapy process to discuss these reasons with your therapist.
A common reason for not wanting to attend a therapy session is feeling like you should have pressing issues to discuss. However, it’s good to attend therapy even if life is going well or seems uneventful.
You might be surprised to have no shortage of substantive topics to discuss with your therapist, even on “boring” days. A therapy session can help recenter you whether you’re having a good or a bad day.
However, don’t feel bad if you still don’t want to attend your therapy session. Remember, we all have days when we need to focus on ourselves. Cancel your appointment, reschedule for another time, and continue with your day.
Reschedule Your Next Appointment
Nonetheless, try to get another appointment on the books as soon as possible. Therapy is a process, and you don’t want to interrupt its momentum. If you can, reschedule the appointment with your therapist after canceling.
If you’re not sure when you want to reschedule, that’s okay, too.
Use your therapist’s booking system as soon as you decide when you want to reschedule. Also, you may want to write down the topics you discussed with your therapist during your last session. Writing them down will keep those topics fresh in your mind for your next appointment.
